Connecticut OKs Same-Sex Civil Unions
WARNING–CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC TO FOLLOW
Well, Connecticut has joined the ranks of the controversial decisions and I must say that I applaud them for doing so because they okay’d civil unions and not marriage. Now speaking from a religious/pastoral point of view I have no problem with Civil Unions. I don’t understand what all the hubbub is about. I don’t agree with homosexuality, however I don’t understand why we would deny them this priviledge. I think Civil Unions are something that the government has the authority to decide.
My beef, however, would be if they decided on “gay marriage” (an oxymoron in my opinion). You see, marriage is a religious thing and not a government thing. People harp on the separation between church and state all the time, however when it comes to marriage people are silent. The state has overrun marriage and taken it outside of religion and placed it firmly in its hands. I don’t think that should be the case. The government can rule on Civil Unions all it wants, but the church should rule on marriage. The government can give all the rights and priviledges it wants to Civil Unions as long as it remains a Civil Union and doesn’t expect churches to give a seal of approval–however the church shouldn’t get involved in that either!
I in no way want to give the impression that I hate anyone in the GLBT community. I can’t expect them to live in my lifestyle and hold them to my values, morals, etc (Christianity) anymore than they expect me to live in/with theirs. We need to continue to keep the church and state separate, why marriage has never been brought up I’ll never know! Marriage should continue to remain the church’s decision and Civil Union’s should continue (start) to be the government’s decision.
