So the Supreme Court has finally made a ruling on the display of the 10 Commandments. Congratulations. I’ve been thinking about this and trying to formulate some grand opinion on the subject, but alas I have none. I will say that I’m still frustrated that this became such a huge deal for Christians, especially those on the right. I’m frustrated that it became such a huge deal that caused such an uproar. The question that continues to come to mind is “What will the display of the 10 Commandments in public locations accomplish?” If you can give me a good reason, then I’d probably join your side, but as of now I have still to hear one.
The one positive that I can see from this is how so many Christians came together from all faith denominations and traditions to accomplish something. This is a very positive thing because of the unity that it shows. However, I really wish that we could come together to tackle some bigger issues–real issues. Why can’t we come together to take care of the poor, or do something about the epidemic of AIDS in Africa and around the world? Why can’t we come together to do something so big that the world must take notice and as a result take notice of the God whom we serve and love? In an article that I read previously (link) it was said that Christians give in the region of $276 billion to the church and para-church organizations and that the United Nations calculates that for $35-40 billion per year, basic social services could be provided to all the poorest people on the planet. (The personal income of Christians world-wide is around $15 trillion). This is something that if Christians banded together, could take care of. Why is it that we’ll band together to get something done with the public display of the 10 commandments, but can’t do anything for the poor?
