they are precious in His sight

last night i had the priviledge of going to a concert…but this was unlike any concert i’d ever been to. last night the african children’s choir performed at our church, a choir comprised of 5 to 11 year old children from uganda and kenya that have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. as they sang and danced around i was amazed at the big smiles that they displayed on their faces despite the horrors of war and the loss of thier parents, the malnutrition and the starvation that these little children have already dealt with in their short lives. they are so young, yet they’ve lived so much.

i was simply taken by one of the little girls in the front row. as the choir was singing songs of worship she was tightly holding her eyes shut and clenching her fists as she sang with all her might. they were singing a song about how God was their shepherd and was going to take care of them, how God was their Father and loved them more than they could ever know…a tear fell from her left eye. i was amazed by her faith, by her trust; i couldn’t believe that she was able to worship God in spite of all that she has experienced and all that she has gone through…but then again maybe i can–because of how she was taken in by this choir and shown the love of Jesus in some amazing ways. this little girl taught me a lot last night. she taught me a lot about love, about faith, about grace, about the necessity to care for the little ones wherever they are in the world because they are precious in His sight.

all of these children have an amazing inner joy that shines through on their faces and in their worship. they were truly amazing children. these children tour throughout the world, have performed at Carnegie Hall at the White House, with Yo Yo Ma, with Bobby McFerrin, and with many others. doing things like this may be the dreams of some, but each of these children have the dream of returning home to Uganda and Kenya to change their country and make a difference. Their “auntie” stood on stage with them and asked them what their dreams were–she walked to different children and they responded with “i want to be a doctor”, “I want to be a nurse”, “i want to be a teacher”, “i want to be a pastor”, “i want to be a pilot”, “i want to be…”

I do hope and pray that these children get to live their dreams to change their home so that God may get the glory.
