i was wrong…

over the past week scott williams has been writing about several lessons he has learned since leaving the pastorate. i think it’s very insightful, and although i don’t fully agree with some things he says nor can i fully understand some others i think this is a great expose on some of the myths that surround full-time ministers. thank you scott for bringing to light some of the things that i was involved in that i too was wrong about and unwilling to admit.

here are the seven topics i will be writing about in the following days. certainly not all ministers would feel all of these things; but based on my twenty years of ministry and my fairly intimate relationships with dozens of pastors i have found:

  1. many pastors believe, down deep, that they are the first among equals
  2. many ministers subconsciously believe that most of the vocations their parishioners pursue don’t matter
  3. career ministers have no idea what the real world is like
  4. pastors believe the vast majority of lay people are spiritually and perhaps physically lazy
  5. ministers love to brag about how overworked they are
  6. seminary is almost useless
  7. how can you possibly believe you’re even good enough to speak for 40 minutes
