over the past week scott williams has been writing about several lessons he has learned since leaving the pastorate. i think it’s very insightful, and although i don’t fully agree with some things he says nor can i fully understand some others i think this is a great expose on some of the myths that surround full-time ministers. thank you scott for bringing to light some of the things that i was involved in that i too was wrong about and unwilling to admit.
here are the seven topics i will be writing about in the following days. certainly not all ministers would feel all of these things; but based on my twenty years of ministry and my fairly intimate relationships with dozens of pastors i have found:
- many pastors believe, down deep, that they are the first among equals
- many ministers subconsciously believe that most of the vocations their parishioners pursue don’t matter
- career ministers have no idea what the real world is like
- pastors believe the vast majority of lay people are spiritually and perhaps physically lazy
- ministers love to brag about how overworked they are
- seminary is almost useless
- how can you possibly believe you’re even good enough to speak for 40 minutes
