believers flock to ‘crying’ virgin mary

i don’t quite understand this stuff.

earlier this year a stain on an underpass in chicago was deemed to be an appearance virgin mary (./link) and people flocked to it crying, laying flowers, candles and rosaries at the feet of the stain while worshipping this “miraculous” event. and now in sacramento people are flocking to worship the image of mary that seems to be crying blood. one of the parishioners believes this is a sign that a big event, such as an earthquake, flood, or disease is immanent. i guess, i just don’t understand these things.

is it possible that God is using these events to communicate with us in some way? why does it only seem to happen to the Catholic church?

these types of events are just strange, and make me curious as to where they’re from… obviously non-catholics could construe this as demonic because they view the veneration of mary as a form of idolatry. while many catholics see this as from God…but my question is ‘to what ends?’

has anyone done any research into this that might be able to help me out a bit? it’s interesting to me.
