separation between church and state.

iran has decided it needs an apology in regards to the cartoon depicting the prophet mohammed (./link).

the more that i read about this story the more amazed i am at how far this has spun out of control. maybe i don’t understand the seriousness of the offense or maybe i’m too laid back concerning religious propriety, but whatever the case this has gone too far. after seeing that iran is demanding an apology i have become even more convinced that it is extremely dangerous to link government and religion together in an intertwining relationship where the line between the two has become completely non-existent. i’ve heard many preachers claim over and over again that we are a christian nation and a christian government needs to be put in place; that the separation we have now is a horrible, evil thing. this frightens me. in fact after learning more about the full extent of the religious right’s agenda and plans for “takeover” the fear has grown and multiplied. (check out this link to better understand just exactly the type of agenda the religious right has in mind.) it seems the religious right is nothing more than power-hungry, especially in the wake of the last election. if an actual christian government is put in place, i wonder exactly what would happen in terms of war mongering… i wonder if we’d go back to the ideals that were present in the crusades.

anyways, it’s unfortunate that around the world our government is viewed as a Christian government because it’s not. many of our international policies and practices couldn’t be further from a Christian worldview. i for one do not want our policies and practices as a nation to be intertwined with and viewed as Christianity at work. i’m not sure of a worse portrayal of the gospel than that.
