how the GOP became God’s own party.

from the first paragraph of a washington post article in Sunday’s paper:

Now that the GOP has been transformed by the rise of the South, the trauma of terrorism and George W. Bush’s conviction that God wanted him to be president, a deeper conclusion can be drawn: The Republican Party has become the first religious party in U.S. history.

wow.

it’ only gets better from there. this is probably one of the best researched articles concerning the mix of religion (read: evangelical’s) and politics from the view of a republican statistician and strategist from the Nixon era.

this article helps to clarify the middle east policy of the white house solidifying some of the rumblings that have been fairly quiet:

[the] U.S. preoccupation with the Middle East has another dimension. In addition to its concerns with oil and terrorism, the White House is courting end-times theologians and electorates from whom the Holy Lands are a battleground of Christian destiny…

this is fairly frightening…. especially the idea that we understand eschatology properly and are doing what we can to either expedite the end-times, or be the fulfillment of end-times prophecy on our own time-table apart from God.
