sometimes it’s all too easy to agree with C.S. Lewis’ angry assertion that God is a Cosmic Sadist, a spiteful imbecile….

Whoa! Did something specific happen in your week? Hope you’re ok.

Hope this helps. We had a sermon this weekend from I Corinthians 1: “I follow Paul. I follow Peter. I follow Apollos.” It really messed me up. Being in a Methodist church, I realized that at some point, our churchfathers said “I follow Wesley.” Now, some people at our church are saying “Fellowship is the key. I follow fellowship.” “No, the gifts of the spirit are the key. I follow charisma.” “No, IHOP.” “No, Emergent.”
NO. We follow Christ, not the means. It might be ok for you to lose your hope in the works of man. As long as it puts your faith back in Christ.
Aaron:
Eric is right. We follow Christ. Christ and the Church are within you. Do not despair on the inadequacies of man. Jesus knows your heart. We are all given some suffering, discomfort in this life. Some physical, mental, or spirtual or a combination of all three. And as trite as this sounds, if it were not for those low points in our lives, our high points would not be so high in comparison. Again, if you were not such an insightful, sensitive human being, non of what is bothering you would do so. God gave you that feeling to make a difference. He did not say it would be easy. Take care.
God’s will shall be done, no matter what the church decides to do. If He wants to make a positive difference in the world, there is nothing to stop Him from doing so. It took me far too long to get even a glimpse of the “incomparably great power for us who believe”. Don’t doubt it. God will use what He wants to, and He will bring you where He wants you to be, whether that involves optimism about the church or not.
