hometown ministry.

everyday is a challenge in ministry, especially as a pastor, but doing it in your hometown is quite possibly one of the strangest things i’ve ever experienced and probably will ever experience.

today while sitting with a guy from the church talking about a few things something struck me–i know this guy.  we kept talking for a while and i learned his age, and a little about his background when i simply asked, "did you go to school in mt. zion?"

"yeah," he responded.

to which i asserted, "we used to hang out in the 6th grade–i came over to your house a few times and spent the night on occasion."

and of course, like usual, i was right.  i’ve seen him several times at church, shook his hand and asked him how things were going but neither one of us put two and two together.  so, here i am pastoring not only people i went to high school with, their parents, and friends of my parents, but now i am also pastoring old childhood friends.

it’s a rather humbling situation and position to be in and each day it grows on me more and more.  i like it.  i like being the pastor for old friends and classmates… it’s still a little strange and it’s taken a lot to get used to (in fact, i’m not sure i’ll ever get used to it) but i like it.
