the team to beat… (season 2)

March 13th, 2007 § 10 comments

my team last year walked away with the league championship after a hard fought season and this year i’m looking for a repeat. you may notice some similarities from last years opening day roster and that’s to be expected with a keeper league and with a championship team… so, i present to you imaginary baseball’s team to beat:

Jesus’ troopers:::you don’t fool Jesus

starting lineup
c……paul loduca (c-nym)
1b….albert pujols (1b-stl)
2b….mark derosa (2b, 3b, of-chc)
3b….pedro feliz (3b-sf)
ss….edgar renteria (ss-atl)
of….josh willingham (of-fla)
of….shane victorino (of-phi)
of….ryan church (of-was)
util..ryan howard (1b-phi)

bench
termell sledge (of-sd)
alfredo amezaga (2b, ss, of-fla)

pitching staff
sp….carlos zambrano (sp-chc)
sp….roy oswalt (sp-hou)
rp….jorge julio (rp-ari)
rp….dan wheeler (rp-hou)
p…..jason schmidt (sp-lad)
p…..adam eaton (sp-phi)
p…..chan ho park (sp-nym)

pitching reserves
todd coffey (rp-cin)
david wells (sp-sd)
jonathan sanchez (sp, rp-sf)
mike stanton (rp-cin)
mark redman (sp-atl)

i’m pretty confident in my pitching staff to open the season… a lot more confident than last year. i do, however need some help in my outfield… that’s my area of concern. hopefully willingham will qualify for catcher again this year and i can move him to the catcher role and trade some of my pitching as well as loduca for some quality outfield help… there’s always hope that my young outfield will produce some resepctable numbers and give me the pop i need to put me over the top! however, if all else fails i have the top two offensive first basemen to keep me afloat! go pooholes and howard… and go Jesus’ troopers!

Maybe you should have picked up Prior or Wood, wait they are already hurt. “Oh no, we suck again!”- Cub Nation

  • John Mark says:

thankfully matt, the cubs future is not dependent on prior and wood anymore. we have moved on.

speaking of sucking, how does a rotation including braden looper, kip wells, and mark mulder sound? and speaking of hurting players, welcome to the wonderful world of jim edmonds. it could be a fun year for the cardinals.

  • monts says:

don’t forget juan encarnacion—he’s hurt too… and at some point i’m sure rolen will go on the DL as well.

  • John Mark says:

ps- about your team: best starting rotation in the league barring another injury from schmidt. no saves. not enough offense in my mind… you’ve got howard and pujols, but that’s it. that’s a lot– and probably accounts for four players worth on other teams, but not enough to win. but what do i know? you won last year. you also have no speed. so, you’re basically punting two categories right away. if you can win and do that at the same time, you will be the fantasy guru of our league in my mind. i’m looking for my title back this year. i like my team a lot. i think it’s balanced.

  • monts says:

i didn’t have saves or SB’s last year either and still won. i had just enough saves to not be in 2nd to last, and just enough SB’s not to be in second to last. that’s all it took.

my offense is weaker this year—but there are also more teams in play this year as well. i think it’s a little better than you may think. i certainly need work in the OF…

  • John Mark says:

we’ll see how it plays out- i would definately pick your team to be in the top 4 right away. your pitching and howard/pujols get you that. but i think you more than anyone can be killed if any of your top players miss some games. you can’t afford a pujols/howard injury this year.

  • monts says:

i had a pujols injury last year—he was out for about a month—and that was before i picked up howard. it could be a fun ride. i have a better pitching staff this year than i did last year though.

i do, however like your offense. it’s really well balanced…

  • John Mark says:

i don’t remember who else you had on offense last year, but i thought you had some other players that really made up for pujols being out. like you said, with 11 teams this year though– any injuries will be costly to any team.

    i’m going home!

  • monts says:

pat the bat burrell was about the only difference offensively on my team from last year to this year numbers-wise. i need a “pat the bat” to pick up some slack.

  • monts says:

actually, i just looked at my team again, and it’s about the same is it was last year offensively, plus there’s some potential for good numbers out of some guys. if those guys that have potential put up average numbers then i’m in good shape!

plus i have potential in the saves category with the 4 RP’s i have. i’m just waiting for lidge to get traded or go crazy and wheeler step in to take his place, and for valverde to screw up again so julio can step in in arizona… and coffey is the front runner for the closer job in cincy…

it’s going to be a fun year!
