letters to the editor

every so often i like to find my way over to the ‘letters to the editor’ in the local newspaper. they’re often times humorous or idiotic and give an interesting glimpse into the mind of the community. but today was different, i found a great letter to the editor in reference to the demise of the chief—chief illinwek.

Are gophers degraded over being Minnesota mascot?

Until a few weeks ago, which saw the demise of the Chief, I had always been proud to be a graduate of the University of Minnesota. I enjoyed watching football and basketball games on TV and hearing the announcers occasionally refer to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Lately, though, I’ve been wondering if the gophers of the world are feeling humiliated and degraded because of their role as the University of Minnesota mascot. The gopher costume someone runs around in is somewhat of a caricature of a real live gopher, and the two front teeth are a little overdone.

As an alum of the university, I’m beginning to feel a little guilty for having a part in exploiting gophers. Maybe the University of Minnesota can come up with a financial contract with the Gopher Nation like Florida State did with the Seminoles Nation, and everything will be all right. I hope so.

maybe we should begin to seriously look into the issue of separation between sport and state…
