tomorrow morning tracy and i are flying out at 5am to San Francisco for a little R&R as well as to scope out the city as a possible site for planting a church. (i could go through a plethora of statistics and reasons as to why San Fran is such a good location, but i’ll spare you the details for now… but if we decide not to plant there, someone certainly needs to be heading out that way soon, the need is immense!) we’ll be spending 6 days and 5 nights out there, taking in all the sites and sounds, neighborhoods and districts while we’re out there as well as doing a few of the “touristy” sorts of things. we have yet to celebrate our 5 year anniversary (happened in march), so this “scouting trip” will also double as an anniversary trip as well, which is really nice.
some of the things that we’ll be doing out there: visiting alcatraz, picnic in golden gate park, watching a free ‘movie in the park’ on saturday, visiting fisherman’s wharf, chinatown, the presidio, art museums and my favorite—watching a giants game at at&t park! (we’ve got great tickets in the arcade—the arcade is the section right along the right field wall overlooking mccovey cove where bonds hits all his bombs.) i’m really excited about this because we have an actual chance of watching bonds hit #755 or 756 at that game!
has anyone else ever been to san fran? are there things that you say we must absolutely do while we’re out there? we’re hoping to get a really good feel for the city, what the culture is like as well as the people. we want to really see if this is a place that we could fit into and see ourselves living in for a long time… so any suggestions would be fantastic!
(your prayers wouldn’t hurt either, because while we’re out there we’re also meeting with stadia, a really good church planting organization!)

I’ve been to SF a couple of times and mostly remember the crappy weather. Go get a bread bowl of clam chowder at the wharf. I do have fond memories of that, as well as taking a romantic stroll across GGB with…Jonas.
AT&T – the best park outside of Wrigley and Fenway (from what I hear anyway). I, on the other hand, get to go to Kauffman Stadium to watch the mighty Royals this Monday. They are literally paying people to go. The package deal with Worlds of Fun amusement park and the Royals is actually cheaper than just buying Worlds of Fun tickets. Gotta love them Royals.
that’s so exciting! I’ve never been to San Fran so I have no advice for you but I hope your guys’ trip is amazing and all it needs to be.
Go 49ers!!!! Go check out their new facilities up the road in Santa Clara…I hear its beautiful!
It’s a good thing you flew out this morning and missed the earthquake. I hope your trip is uneventful in the geophysical arena, but eventful and productive in terms of your goals. BTW, don’t forget to send your itinerary. Love you both!
The last fellow at our office did his internship & residency at UCSF and went back to practice there after his fellowship. He is stopping by the office, I’ll ask him what you guys should hit before moving there.
At Fisherman’s wharf you can order crab at some outside vendors who will crack it for you and then you can just hang out at their stand and eat some of the best crab! Boudin bakery was fabulous and is also right at the wharf.
If you want a little exercise to keep up with your running, rent some bikes. Cindy and I biked across the bridge, then down into sausalito and around to tiburon where you can catch a ferry back across the bay. Very cool, day.
One of my first businesses as a teenager required me to go to San Fran regularly. I was the only 16 year old staying at the Fremont by myself
I absolutely LOVE that town. The gay Christian community will be completely shocking for any modern conservative from the Midwest though, but if you can stomach it, check out some of the artists and musicians within that “enclave of sin” as my pastor friend from LA calls it.
My favorite town is across the bay from San Fran — San Mateo. It is a hub of old paleoconservatives who still save in gold and silver, love a good wine, and can cackle about the rest of the country as they meet in their paid-off homes and instigate anger with their heirs when they take their $30,000 cruises paid in cash. Love those folks.
The rest of San Fran’s geekie atmosphere is a downer, though.
Make sure you check out Sam Wo at the corner of Grant and Washington in chinatown. Legendary tiny restaurant. Bring your own beverage as they dont sell anything other than tea.
we are back!
thanks everyone for all your suggestions, we had a terrific time!
we’re playing a little bit of catch-up, but i’ll post about our trip soon… i’ve got a lot of stuff to post!
